Toe Up Sock Tutorial

Ah, the joy of socks! The feeling of accomplishment when you finally finish a whole pair of hand knitted socks is one thats hard to beat. However, theres little worse than knitting a sock only to get nearly to the end and finding that you’ve run out of yarn. Toeless socks are a definite no-no, even for you fashion loving hipster types 🙂 How to get around this? Toe-Up socks of course. That is, socks that are knitted from the toe upwards. So heres a sassy little pattern that will produce a sock that will fit a ladies size 6. Grab some DPN’s (2.5mm), 2 balls of sock yarn (I’m using Drops Fabel) and a whole lot of stitch markers.

Toe Up Sock Pattern

Begin by casting on 16 stitches using  Judys Magic Cast On https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pmxRDZ-cwo It’s tricky if you’re a beginner but after a couple of tries you’ll get it and lets face it, if I can then you most certainly can!

Knit one round and then divide the stitches between 3 needles. You could divide between 4 but it’ll make it easier when you come to the heel if you only use 3. So place 1/2 of the stitches on needle 1 and then 1/4 on each of the two other needles. For the toe, we need to increase by 4 stitches every other round.

Rnd 1) Needle 1 – kfb, k to last 2 st, kfb, k1. Needle 2 – kfb, k to end of needle. Needle 3 – k to last 2 st, kfb, k1.

Rnd 2) Knit all stitches.

Repeat both rounds until there a total of 64 st. (32 on needle 1, 16 on needles 2 & 3)

Foot

After increasing to 64 st, knit in st st for desired length which should be about 2″ shorter than the length of your foot.

Heel

The heel will be constructed using short row heel and only using the stitches on needle 1.

Row 1) On needle 1, k to last st, wrap & turn, place a marker.

Row 2) P to last st, wrap & turn, place a marker.

Row 3) K to marker, wrap & turn, place marker.

Row 4) P to marker, wrap & turn, place marker.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have 11 st wrapped on each side and 10 st unwrapped in the middle.

Picking up and re-wrapping

Row 1) K to marker, remove the marker, pick up and knit wrap, wrap the next stitch a 2nd time and turn.

Row 2) P to marker, remove the marker, pick up and k wrap, wrap next stitch a 2nd time and turn, keep the marker in place.

Row 3) K to marker, remove the marker, pick up and knit both wraps, wrap next stitch a 2nd time and turn, keep the marker in place.

Row 4) P to marker, remove the marker, pick up and knit both wraps, wrap next stitch a 2nd time and turn, keep marker in place.

Repeat rows 3 and 4 until you have no more wrapped stitches. The 32 stitches will all now be in play.

Leg

Resume knitting in st st until about 2″ from the desired length. Cuff

K2, P2 for approximately 10 rounds.

Cast Off

Cast off using a stretchy bind off such as this brilliant one from SweetGeorgia Yarns

Now give yourself a high five (definitely not a euphemism), you just knitted a sock! One down, one to go 🙂
